The Joseph Palmer Foundation awards annual prize to the Garvan Institute

8 May 2017

Foundation directors, Malcolm Palmer and Gabriel Farago, had the pleasure last week of presenting the Palmer Innovation Prize for 2017 to Dr Sean Warren at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.

The Palmer Innovation Prize is the annual $15,000 donation granted by the Joseph Palmer Foundation to an individual or team at the Garvan Institute that has excelled in medical research innovation.

Dr. Warren, a PhD graduate from the Imperial College London and the Institute of Cancer Research in London, works as a post-doctoral researcher in the Cancer Invasion and Metastasis group.  His research innovation was to develop a system using fluorescent imaging that will improve cancer therapies by allowing researchers to look at the activity of drugs in experimental models. By determining whether multiple drugs are hitting their target in one experiment, his approach enables them to rapidly determine the optimal treatment strategy.

This was the second year in a row the Joseph Palmer Foundation had awarded this prestigious prize and Chairman & Founder, Malcolm Palmer, was very pleased to congratulate Dr. Warren and confirmed the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to The Garvan.

The Foundation was established in 2015 by Malcolm, the Managing Partner of Joseph Palmer & Sons, as a convenient, transparent and efficient means for clients to donate to worthwhile charitable causes. Other Directors of the Trustee are Gabriel Farago M.A., LL.B and Dr. Andrew Katsifis.

Each year, the Joseph Palmer Foundation trustees determine which organisations or causes will receive its support. Their short-term goal is to build up and manage a substantial monetary fund and, in the long term, to provide a legacy that will benefit the community for generations to come. Joseph Palmer & Sons do not charge fees for managing the fund.

Donations of all sizes are welcome. Furthermore, donors who wish to contribute more than $50k can establish their own sub-fund and nominate their own charitable causes. This is a much simpler and more cost-efficient approach than establishing and managing their own fund.

If you would like more information on the Foundation, or would like to make a tax-deductible donation before the end of the financial year, you are most welcome to contact Ron Stephens on (02) 9233 2433 or at rstephens@jpalmer.com.au
